Officiating mechanics refers to the specific positioning, movements, and responsibilities assigned to each official on the field before, during, and after a play. Mechanics ensure that every part of the game is properly observed, calls are made accurately, and officials work together as a coordinated team.
Here’s a simple breakdown of officiating mechanics:
Positioning – Where each official stands based on the type of play (e.g., kickoff, scrimmage, goal-line).
Coverage – Which parts of the field or players an official is responsible for watching.
Signals – Communication with one another using standardized hand signals and verbal cues.
Movement – How officials transition during a play to maintain optimal angles and visibility.
The approved Colorado mechanics are published in our Mechanics Manual, which ensures consistency and professionalism across all areas of the state.
Note: Due to copyright restrictions, the full mechanics manual is no longer available online. New officials will receive a hard copy manual when they register. Current officials will receive an updated manual every 5 years. Any amendments to the Colorado mechanics will be published annually in a PDF document and linked below.
